Carson Hocevar has shown exceptional talent in the NASCAR Cup Series. The #77 driver for Spire Motorsports has been full time since 2024. Over the past three seasons, Hocevar has shown incredible improvement in each race. If you remember, Made of Sports put out an article following his rookie season. We have been tracking his stats and finishes, waiting for his first win. Before we get into that though, let’s breakdown his past two seasons:
- Rookie Season: Carson had a total of 2 DNFs, 13 top-15s, 6 top-10s, and one top-5. At Nashville, he was fined $50,000 and docked 25 driver points for an on-track incident with Harrison Burton. Despite this, Hocevar finished the season with an average finish of P18 and 686 total driver points and with the title of Rookie of the Year.
- Sophomore Season: Hocevar had a total of 8 DNFs, 9 top-10s, and 2 top-5s. At Texas, he won his first career Busch Light Pole Award, but finished P24 after getting caught up in an accident despite having led 22 laps. Carson finished the season with an average finish of P21 and a total of 702 driver points.
Now that we’re all caught up, let’s break down this season and the spring Talladega race. Currently, Carson sits with an average finish of P14, has 3 top-5s, and 4 top-10s, and has a total of 292 points. At the Jack Links 500, Carson started P12.
On lap 115, The Big One was triggered by Bubba Wallace (23), which Hocevar was involved in but had little damage. On lap 151, the race restarted with Carson P2.
On lap 181, Carson and Erik Jones (43) battled for P2 just before Jones spins into the infield and gets stuck triggering a caution. The race restarted on lap 186 with Carson P2 battling with Chris Buescher for the lead.
Following a push from Alex Bowman (48), Hocevar takes the lead and scores his first career Cup Series Win! But it didn’t stop there. Carson celebrated in a very Carson way: inspired by Dale Earnhardt. Carson did his victory lap and burnout sitting in the window of his car, and even tried to catch a beer thrown by a fan.
This celebration has sparked a lot of conversation online, with most fans loving it. NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell praised this celebration, saying “one of the coolest things I've seen in a long time,” and Lionel Racing’s website crashed following the win with fans trying to pre-order race won diecasts. Many fans are calling this the “Hell Yeah” era of NASCAR and are convinced that Carson is exactly the type of driver the sport has needed for a long time now, and is helping bring in a younger generation of fans.
